In a major study published in the, researchers tested how well the drug affects men’s sexual health.
Researchers found that while some users were less likely to be sexually active, others were more likely to have lower levels of sexual desire, arousal or satisfaction.
“A number of men (and some women) reported that they had heard of the medication,” said lead researcher Dr. Steven L. Eberhardt, from the University of Rochester School of Medicine in New York City, who was not involved in the study. “It is important that patients and their physicians understand that the medication does not have to be the cause of their sexual problems.”
The study’s findings were supported by the National Institute of Mental Health, which funded the study. Eberhardt has received honoraria from Merck, Pfizer, Pfizer, and Eli Lilly, which are part of the drug industry.
“This is an important study that should be made publicly available,” Eberhardt said. “Patients should be encouraged to report any negative effects they may have experienced, even if they are not experiencing them.”
Researchers conducted the study with patients, looking at data from three clinical trials, including men who had never been diagnosed with erectile dysfunction. They found that when Eberhardt and a clinical trial were combined, those who took the drug were just as likely to have low sexual desire, arousal or satisfaction as those taking Viagra.
“The results showed that patients with low sexual desire were more likely to experience lower rates of sexual satisfaction,” Eberhardt said. “However, the drug’s ability to affect sexual desire was not found in either trial.”

A similar analysis was performed by researchers at the University of Florida, who found no relationship between low sexual desire and sexual dysfunction, erectile dysfunction or performance anxiety.
Eberhardt said that while some patients were more likely to experience lower levels of sexual desire, others were more likely to experience low levels of sexual satisfaction.
“Patients with erectile dysfunction are generally not concerned about the effects of the medication,” he said. “They are less likely to be concerned about their sexual function.”
Eberhardt noted that the study results were based on “a very small sample,” and that they were “not powered to detect statistically significant results.”
Eberhardt added that the results may indicate that the drug does not cause sexual dysfunction or treat low sexual desire, even in men.
He said that if Eberhardt believes that low sexual desire is a contributing factor, he plans to write an manuscript about the drug’s use in patients with diabetes.
“It may be a good drug for those who do not have diabetes, but I am worried that they will not be able to get a refill,” Eberhardt said.
